When the line between customer and friend blurs…

One of my mentors, Marc DiGiorgio, now the CRO of Resolver, used to tell me: “Don’t forget to develop your network.” Besides this, he also told me many other important things that I chose to ignore. But, if there was one piece of advice that I wish I had followed in the past, it would be that one.

In my thirties I spent my time in a rat race trying to succeed in my career and home life. My life was filled with first-world problems and I spent a lot of time worrying about them: from ensuring that my son got the best homemade muffins, to making sure my team felt like they were on solid career paths.

But do I regret it?

Not at all. But definitely could have spent less time on it. If I had taken all that effort and worked on my network, I think I would be reaping even more rewards now, because my network is becoming very valuable.

Who you spend time with is who you become

“Who you spend time with is who you become,” Tony Robbins says time and time again. This statement rings very true for me. Now that I run an agency and can pick who I work with, I’m getting way smarter!

I’m lucky to have so many amazing customers, and anyone who sees us together would wonder if we are also close friends. This became evident last week when I held the first event for my business. We drank wine and ate charcuterie together. We took silly photos and made each other laugh. There is no question in my mind that these relationships are absolutely invaluable.

That idea was even more validated when Jenna Prada, Head of Marketing at LifeWorks, completely interrupted me while talking with a potential customer and said “Oh stop talking because I can explain what services you provide better than you can!” Yep, customer/friend and friend/customer lines got completely blurred as she pushed me out of the way and stepped in to help me win a new customer. And I have to say that I am loving every minute of it.

A special thanks to my customers, supporters, and friends who are blurring those lines! Here are some pics to show off the fun!
